For the first time, a forum tries to focus on data management in its entirety, from governance, through security, the cloud, automatic learning, data virtualization and much more. Today we introduce you Neha Mangal from A.P. Moller Maersk that will be a member of Data Governance roundtable scheduled at 10.30 NYT 16th March
Tell us a little about your professional career
I have a Master’s in Business Administration in Marketing Management and a graduate degree in Biotechnology. I am also certified by DAMA CDMP in Data Governance. Throughout my career, I have tried to actively seek roles which are new and challenging and can keep me out of my comfort zone. I have been fortunate to work directly with C level executives in recent years which has been a great learning experience and you get to directly contribute to the ‘big picture’, which has been awesome!
Overall, I have around 11 years of experience working across Shipping & Logistics, FMCG & Banking Sector. I started my career in Commercial side of Business with a FMCG major- Colgate Palmolive where I learned first-hand nuisances of B2C Sales, importance of great customer Experience and the need of always having an evolving competition strategy. Post this, I had a brief stint in the Indian Banking sector where I worked with HDFC bank which is India’s largest private sector bank. I am currently with another great company called as A.P. Moller Maersk/Maersk. I joined here in a Trade Management, Business Strategy role which allowed me to learn in depth about the very interesting Shipping, Transportation & Logistics sector. From last many years I have been in Data Space where I with my team have been part of different Master Data Projects, Data Governance Deliveries & overall set up of Enterprise Data Governance at Maersk.
What are your challenges, what do you like to do with the data?
My main challenges have been around bringing the right data culture on an enterprise level and to find good people for the Data roles. My vision of good data is simple. It should be fit for purpose and reliable.
Do you think that companies have the right culture to manage data in a different way?
I have genuinely seen a wave of positive change in last 2 years where I can see senior leaders getting aware of the importance of data in a way which was never seen before. This urgency is felt in the wake of Digital Transformation which is the primary agenda of almost every company right now regardless of the scale. Data is the backbone of any digital transformation.
Though there is still a very long way to go where we can say that Data is a general priority seen & felt across companies. Importance of linking commercial success, customer experience, cost savings to better enterprise data can be the key to achieve this.
What are the most important challenges for CIO, CDO, CDO, CTO in 2021?
In my opinion, that would be bringing leadership across Business units and business functions together on same data agenda or data strategy, choice of tools and building a unified data and tech landscape, enabling adherence to privacy guidelines applicable for the company like GDPR and also show proof. Last and not the least hiring the right talent!
What are you going to talk about at DMS–
The title of my paper is “How to build & sustain a Data Culture and a Data Mindset. ” I think it is enough descriptive 🙂
Why did you support the event from the beginning ?
I am a practitioner of DAMA practices myself and have taken in many of its recommended best practices and governance framework guidelines in the work done in our current company, hence I truly believe in the good change this event is trying to bring in and that is the reason I have and will continue to support it!
Thanks Neha it is a pleasure to have you at the event
