Dan Everett will be at Data Management Summit International Edition 2021

We unveil day after day all those professionals who will participate with their presence within one of the most important event of the Data Management. For the first time, a forum tries to focus on data management in its entirety, from governance, through security, the cloud, automatic learning, data virtualization and much more. Today we introduce you Dan Everett from Informatica that will be a facilitator of Master Data: The Source of Truth? A new challenge in Data Architecture scheduled for 17th March

Tell us a little about your professional career

I have more than 20 years of experience in data and analytics spanning strategy, governance, management, and ethics. And before that I was involved in metrology and process engineering, so I have extensive experience in standards and measurement. My passion is helping people understand how to use data to improve business and organizational outcomes.

What are your challenges, what do you like to do with the data?

My challenge is helping people shift their mind set from a technology-oriented perspective to a business perspective. It comes down to helping people think about “Why” are we doing something. Why are you building a data lake and building an AI team? Because we want to drive profitable revenue growth through cross and up sell.

How do activities across functional areas impact the business goal? First, everyone involved needs to understand that data activities like cataloging and cleansing help ensure complete and accurate data, which impacts the accuracy of analytics activities like propensity-to-buy modeling. The accuracy of the insights generated from machine learning algorithms, such as which customer segments are most likely to buy specific products, in turn impacts the response rates of personalized marketing offers. And the response rates to marketing activities in turn impacts cross-sell and upsell revenue generation and marketing campaign return on investment.

Do you think that companies have the right culture to manage data in a different way?

Creating a data-driven culture is a hot topic, but culture is about people and behavioral change not technology. That’s why so many organizations struggle with it. Neuroscience shows that the most stressful thing for humans is uncertainty. In fact, an uncertain outcome is more stressful than a known bad outcome. Changing the organizational culture creates a lot of uncertainty for people. What does this mean for me? Is my job in danger? Does it threaten my sense of purpose?

And intertwined with uncertainty is our perception of our ability to exert control over our environment. More autonomy in how we deal with situations yields a greater sense of certainty about the future. So as much communication as possible about what the change means for the individual, how they do their job, and the bigger impact to the company is critical. Again it goes back to the “Why”, as well as the “What’s in it for me”. And as much freedom to act autonomously as we can provide will make a significant difference.

What are the most important challenges for CIO, CDO, CDO, CTO in 2021?

To me it always comes back to linking data and data management to business outcomes. We talk a lot about organizations needing more data literacy. I think the IT and data leaders also need more business literacy. If I was going to have a conversation with my CFO I wouldn’t talk about number of duplicate records and siloed master data repositories.

My conversation would go something like, I understand Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) has been increasing and you’re concerned because it impacts earnings, market capitalization, and credit worthiness.

I can help you:

  • Harmonize order entry, inventory, and supply chain data to ensure accurate delivery date quotes and increase complete order-fill rates
  • Ensure accurate and complete shipping data to increase on-time deliver rates
  • Ensure accurate and complete billing and contact data to decrease invoice delivery time
  • Ensure accurate and complete purchase order and tax data to decrease invoice disputes

In addition to helping manage DSO, this will help:

  • Increase customer satisfaction and repeat business
  • Reduce returns, allowances, and discounts
  • Reduce re-shipping and logistics costs
  • Increase productivity of Order Entry, Accounts Receivable, Pick and Pack, and Logistics processes

What I need from you is commitment to:

  • Measure key metrics DSO, Invoice Disputes, On-Time Delivery, etc., beforehand
  • Continue to monitor and measure key metrics as we actively manage the data
  • Confirm key metrics improvements are a result of improved data management

You’ve supported the event from the beginning. Why did you do that?

I love data and analytics. I enjoy sharing what I know and learning from others. As I said before, my passion is helping people understand how to use data to improve business and organizational outcomes. Events like this are a great way to network with peers, and learn best practices, tips, and tricks. I’m looking forward to my panel as well as the other sessions.

Is there anything else you would like to add? <books, yourwebpage, videos, seminars, etc>
