Mike Meriton will be at Data Management Summit International Edition 2021
We continue to unveil the protagonists of the next Data Management Summit International Edition to be held on March 16th and 17th. More than 220 professionals are registered for the event and there are no more places available. Today we have the pleasure to introduce Mike Meriton from EDM Council.
Tell us a little about your professional career
I am currently a Co-Founder and the COO of the EDM Council and served as the first Chairman and active board member since inception in 2005. I focus on EDM Council’s strategy for engaging data management professionals across a growing range of industries, plus new member services and council operations. I previously served as the CEO of GoldenSource and held key executive roles at CheckFree (Fiserv), D&B and Oracle.
What are your challenges, what do you like to do with the data?
Data presents many opportunities and is at the center of every business. But it also presents many challenges, especially with the exponential growth of the volume and types of data in our lives. A significant challenge is managing the precision and quality of data itself. If companies cannot trust their data for their many applications and analytics, then it is useless. The EDM Council was created to elevate the practice of Data Management as a business and operational priority, and ensure that firms are able to promote data literacy and gain the maximum value possible from their data assets as they pursue responsible analytics, AI and data. To support this key objective, the Council is the leading advocate for the development and implementation of data standards, best practices and comprehensive training and certification programs.
Do you think that companies have the right culture to manage data in a different way?
The good news is that firms around the world are increasing their focus and resources for their data assets, analytics, data literacy and data management strategies. Also critical is the need to promote responsible AI, analytics and data, given the huge impact and dependency of data on our global society. With the correct tools, practices and knowledge, companies can implement innovative approaches to effectively and efficiently manage data and pursue advanced analytics. EDM Council defines the core capabilities needed for the development and implementation of practical data management and analytics programs. Through collaboration with our members, who understand what does and doesn’t work in the real world, we developed DCAM (Data Management Capability Assessment Model). This framework is now in place in hundreds of firms around the world, and can be at the center of an effective data-driven culture and drive positive transformation for today’s businesses.
What are the most important challenges for CIO, CDO, CDO, CTO in 2021?
There are many challenges affecting C-level data leaders in 2021, especially in the middle of a global pandemic. To name a few: executives have to navigate through budget cuts and bottom-line pressures; manage data to support innovations such as advanced analytics, cloud migration or AI and Machine Learning initiatives; maintain data privacy and governance; meet growing complex regulations around the world; combat security threats; foster enterprise-wide responsible, ethical data and analytics practices; and stay up-to-date on the latest industry developments.
What are you going to talk about in your speech at the Data Management Summit?
I will talk about DCAM (Data Management Capability Assessment Model), which is the industry standard framework for effective data management and analytics. DCAM defines the scope of capabilities required to establish, enable and sustain a mature data management discipline. It addresses the strategies, organizational structures, technology and operational best practices needed to successfully drive data management and literacy across your organization, and ensures your data can support digital transformation, advanced analytics such as AI and ML, and a responsible, ethical approach to data and analytics.
I will also share some of EDM Council’s upcoming initiatives such as the Cloud Data Management Capability (CDMC) workgroup, ESG workgroup and ROI workgroup. These programs, which have participation from hundreds of professionals from dozens of firms across multiple industries – including some of the largest firms around the world – are focusing on some of today’s most critical business challenges and the data and analytics capabilities that are needed for them to be effective.
All of this is driving towards the opportunity to promote data literacy, responsible uses of data and best practices for data management and analytics – making data as useful as possible for our world that is increasingly dependent on data throughout our lives.
