Tell us a little about your professional career
Enterprise Data Governance Executive with leadership experience developing programs and digital transformation strategies for government agencies at local, national, federal, and international levels. Most of my of success has been in providing quality data to drive decisions, insight, and aligning data strategy with the ethical use of data supporting business missions. Frameworks include NIST, ISO, DAMA, and CMMI Institute Data Management Maturity (DMM).
What are your challenges, what do you like to do with the data?
Taking the holistic view that data governance is the cornerstone of any data management, data implementation or data integration project. Too often we hear that the sole purpose of data management is to achieve business revenue objectives in the short term. The long term consequences of a non-holistic approach to stewarding data is an erosion in the trust of the data stakeholders. This includes customers, and internal consumers of that data. Ultimately trust is the product data management is selling. Data Governance is the compass for Data Management.
Do you think that companies have the right culture to manage data in a different way?
In the US, no. Some companies are starting to use sustainability goals as a form of enlightened self interest regarding the publication and democratization of data. However, privacy and due care is not built to the left in most data projects. GRC is minimized in favor of short-term revenue goals and, ultimately, this is not sustainable.
What are the most important challenges for CIO, CDO, CDO, CTO in 2021?
Meeting business objectives while holding business stakeholders accountable for due diligence and care when stewarding sensitive PII and PHI data..
The argument of your round table has many approaches and a long way to go, what do you expect from the members present in this panel that you will have to participate?
Our different approaches and experiences in management the relationship between governance and management.
You’ve supported the event from the beginning. Why did you do that?
The Open Data Institute once said they are convening a community to solve global issues regarding dissemination of data on the WWW. I see the Data Management Summit as the convening of a community around the appropriate standards and guidelines toward the treatment of data. Data Governance is becoming more automated. This has benefits for society in general but this must be tempered with the measurement of benefice as well as the bottom line for stakeholders and society in general.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Look for whitepapers on the pillars of data governance coming out soon on the Thoughtworks website as well as my own LinkedIn profile where you can read about how my thoughts on data governance in the public sector have evolved over the years.
