Hiba Laziri will be at Data Management Summit Latam Edition 2022
We unveil day after day all those professionals who will participate with their presence within one of the most important events of Data Management. For the first time, a forum tries to focus on data management in its entirety, from governance, through security, the cloud, automatic learning, data virtualization and much more. Today we introduce you Hiba Laziri from IE University as this 2022 edition will be attended by the winners of IE’s NewSet Datathon. She will present his speech with Beatriz Barretto
Tell us a little about your professional career
I am a second-year student at IE University in Spain studying data and business analytics. I was able to deepen my learning in the field of data through my involvement in many competitions and datathons, in which I had the opportunity to construct numerous projects with my other teammates.
What are your challenges, what do you like to do with the data?
The biggest challenge with data, in my opinion, is making it comprehensible and relevant enough to be used in making the best decisions. That is why, the majority of the projects I’ve worked on so far had a final goal of creating an impact either through optimizing the use of resources or contributing to the creation of a solution to a social problem or an environmental problem. In order to maximize the impact of the data, I always work to make it understandable to a wider audience, including individuals without a background in technology, because at the end of the day they’re the ones who will be affected by the decisions made.
Do you think that companies have the right culture to manage data in a different way?
I believe the majority of businesses now recognize how crucial it is to manage data effectively in order for a company to perform at its peak. The applicability of data is actually not one-sided since it can be used to enhance every aspect of the organization, from a marketing plan to resource efficiency and many other areas. However, this sector is still extremely young and only recently becoming more significant, so it is our responsibility to demonstrate its full potential.
What do you want to talk about at the Data Management Summit?
At this summit I would like to present a project that I worked on recently with my three other teammates. This project stems from an initiative of the municipality of bristol to enhance the living areas of bats in the city as their survival is threatened by light pollution. In order to protect bats from lights while also taking into account a number of other criteria, such as the safety of pedestrians and drivers, we developed an algorithm that provides the light configuration that could be implemented throughout the entire city of Bristol. Through this presentation, we hope to share our perspectives as young professionals in the field of data science as well as our thought processes for using data to create an impact.
You’ve supported the event from the beginning. Why did you do that?
I believe that the Data Management Summit is an excellent opportunity to share but also learn about the various ways to deal with a problem that involves data. I’ve been a supporter of this event from the beginning since I believe it gives many data scientists from many professions and industries the chance to exchange experiences and solutions to data-related problems. Sharing the various approaches that can be taken is crucial to be able to provide the best solution, and that is precisely what the Data Management Summit is for. In fact, for every problem that requires the use of data, there is not a single universal approach to find the final solution, but rather numerous ways that lead to different outputs, each having different pros and cons.
